Shimla Is More Than Mall Road: 10 Must-Visit Places in and Around Town
A walkable town day, a heritage detour and a separate outing towards Kufri or Naldehra
Discover 10 places to visit in and around Shimla, from the Ridge and Jakhu to Tara Devi, Kufri and Naldehra, with a sensible route plan and real photos.
Before you start
Shimla works best when you mix walking time with a few well-chosen drives. Do not turn every morning into a race between distant viewpoints: the Ridge, Mall Road and nearby lanes already make a rewarding town day. This ten-stop shortlist also includes places outside central Shimla, so spread it over several days rather than promising yourself everything in one afternoon.
1. The Ridge
Start with the open heart of town. It is a useful place to get your bearings before exploring the nearby lanes and church. Leave a little time for simply sitting with the view; changing light can make an ordinary pause the best part of the day.

2. Mall Road
Walk the shops and café-lined stretch at an easy pace. Pick one snack or tea stop instead of trying to visit every trending café. Central access involves walking, so check where your vehicle can drop you and how your luggage will reach the hotel.

3. Jakhu Temple
The hilltop Hanuman temple adds a climb and a different view of Shimla. Choose your approach according to your energy and the weather; check current road or ropeway arrangements rather than assuming every option will run. Keep loose belongings secure around the monkeys.

4. Christ Church
Make this a slow stop beside the Ridge, looking at the church’s exterior and, when open to visitors, its interior. Worship and visitor access do not always follow the same rhythm. Keep voices down and follow the current photography instructions instead of treating the building as a studio.

5. Viceregal Lodge
Head towards the historic lodge associated with the Indian Institute of Advanced Study for a change from the busy central streets. It suits visitors who enjoy architecture and gardens. Check the official visitor arrangements beforehand because access to the grounds and interior need not be identical.

6. Annandale
The broad glade offers a striking contrast to Shimla’s steep streets. Plan the outing around current access to the Army Heritage Museum rather than assuming unrestricted access to every part of the grounds. Account for the return journey; the approach feels different when you have to climb back.

7. Summer Hill
Choose Summer Hill for a quieter hillside atmosphere instead of another crowded shopping stop. It can fit naturally into a western-side outing. Give yourself time to walk gently and check transport back, especially if your hotel is across town and the weather is turning.

8. Tara Devi Temple
This hill temple is better treated as a separate outing than a hurried box to tick between central sights. Dress for a place of worship and carry an extra layer if the weather calls for it. Ask locally about the approach and avoid committing to a rigid sunset return.

9. Kufri
Kufri is an excursion outside the central town, not a guaranteed snow experience. Conditions and activities vary with the season. Decide what you actually want—views, walking or an available activity—and confirm the total price and what is included before paying an operator.

10. Naldehra
Keep Naldehra for a greener, slower outing beyond Shimla. It is associated with a scenic golf-course setting, but looking around is not the same as unrestricted entry onto a working course. Check access, pick a suitable walking route and leave room for a relaxed return drive.

How to group your route
Suggested plan: Day 1 — the Ridge, Christ Church, Mall Road and Jakhu if energy and access allow. Day 2 — Viceregal Lodge, Summer Hill and Annandale, with Tara Devi as an optional separate drive. Day 3 — choose Kufri or Naldehra according to your interests. Adding both is possible on a longer trip, but doing less often feels better on hill roads.
Check before you go
Check the weather, road advisories and your hotel’s actual vehicle access before travelling. Snow is seasonal and never guaranteed. Carry layers and shoes with reliable grip. Avoid planning a late return on unfamiliar roads, and use local advice if rain or snow changes access. Prices, opening days and ropeway operations can change; confirm close to your visit.
