UPI Safety: 7 Checks Before You Pay or Accept a Refund
A practical checklist for festive shopping, QR codes and payment screenshots
Can a refund request empty your account? Learn seven UPI safety checks, spot fake payment proof, and verify money inside your own banking app.
The refund trap starts with a believable story
You buy a gift online. Later, someone calls claiming your refund is stuck and asks you to scan a QR code. The story sounds helpful; the requested action deserves a second look. NPCI warns that requests to scan codes and enter a UPI PIN to receive rewards can be fraudulent. Read the action on your own payment screen before authorising anything.
1. Check what the PIN is approving
For an ordinary incoming transfer, you do not need to enter your UPI PIN to receive money. A PIN prompt should make you pause and read the amount, recipient and transaction type. Never share the PIN with a caller, merchant or person claiming to work for your bank. If a process feels confusing, close it and contact the bank through its official app.
2–4. Verify the recipient, the payment and the support number
Before paying, compare the displayed payee name with the intended shop or person. If they differ, ask why before continuing. When someone says they have paid you, check the transaction in your own bank or UPI app; a screenshot or notification shown on their phone is not your account record. Find customer support inside the official app or bank website instead of trusting a number sent in an unsolicited message.
5–7. Resist urgency, unfamiliar links and remote access
A genuine purchase does not require you to hurry because a stranger says an offer expires in thirty seconds. Open the shopping app yourself to check an order. Avoid installing unfamiliar apps or sharing your screen at a caller's request. Keep your device locked and do not expose payment screens, OTPs or account details while asking for help.
A two-minute household drill
Before the next shopping trip, ask everyone at home: Where will we verify an incoming payment? How do we find the bank's real support channel? What would we do if a caller asks for a PIN? Agreeing on these steps in advance makes it easier to stop an uncomfortable conversation. If you suspect an unauthorised transaction, contact your bank promptly through its verified channel and preserve the transaction details. Do not send another payment to someone promising to recover the first.
